Type of league: Head-to-Head Limited Keeper League
Number of teams: 10
Cost: $55 per year X 10 teams = $550 (All financials in Canadian dollars)
Payouts:
First Prize Regular Season -- $210
Second Prize Regular Season -- $100
First Prize Playoffs -- $120
Second Prize Playoffs -- $70
Highest Weekly Point Total -- $50
The $55CDN will be converted to US dollars and rounded up to the highest 0 or 5 (E.g. $43 goes to $45). This is because Fantrax uses US dollars. This season (2017-18) the fee will be $45US. The payouts are converted to as close as possible. US payouts below for 2017-18 season:
First Prize Regular Season -- $171.83
Second Prize Regular Season -- $81.83
First Prize Playoffs -- $98.16
Second Prize Playoffs -- $57.26
Highest Weekly Point Total -- $40.92
Inaugural Draft
The Inaugural Draft will consist of 30 live rounds via snake draft format (E.g. 1-10, 10-1, 1-10, etc). All players, including 2017 draftees will be open for selection since the Inaugural Draft will be the only draft for the 2017 season. During and before the draft trading of 2018 picks will NOT be allowed. Following the completion of the draft, these picks will then become fair game. More TBA.
Fall Draft Date: Slow snake style draft starting the 15th of August every year. A time limit of 8 hour will be given for each pick, although ideally the whole draft will hopefully be completed in under or around two weeks since all GMs will be expected to tune in multiple times a day and leave contact information so that the commissioner can contact them once their pick reaches the 5 hour mark (roughly). A time freeze will be put in place from 1am to 7am EST. Order of Draft and Keeper Totals: Total keepers will be determined by our regular season record. 1st place will hold 10, 2nd place will hold 11, 3rd through 8th place will hold 12 and the 9th and 10th finishers will hold 13. Draft order will be determined by inverse order of regular season rankings with a weighted lottery based on total losses between the two non playoff teams to determine the order of 1st and 2nd pick. The lottery will only effect the first round. Each manager will select in the draft until they fill a 30 man roster, at which point they will no longer be eligible to make selections. This means it is possible that some GMs finish before the 10th round and others may continue picking into the 13th, 14th or even higher rounds.
Note: In addition to the above keeper totals, all GM's may hold up to 5 players on their farm team. See below for Farm Team Regulations. For the September draft, managers must let the commissioner know which players they plan to keep no later than one week before the draft. If they do not, the commissioner will keep the players with the best points totals from the previous season, in descending order. Drafting Limitations: Players are eligible to be drafted in our league if they are drafted/signed by an NHL team or have previously played in the NHL and are available in Fantrax's list of available players.
Note: Once a GM has filled their 30 man roster, they are no longer eligible to trade away or for draft picks in that years draft. E.g. If you are done in the 9th round and still own your 10th round pick, you forfeit said pick without the rights to trade it once you make that final selection. The 10th rounder is fair game to be traded before the 30th roster player is drafted though.
Number of Players per Team: Draft to 30: On Fantrax we start 2 C, 2 LW, 2 RW, 3 F, 1Skt, 5 D, 2 G, and have 13 available bench positions. Upon completion of the Fall draft, a minimum of 5 players must be farm eligible. Subsequent to that, however, a GM may have as many or as few farm team eligible players as they choose. Also, immediately following the draft, we increase the roster size to 33 which gives GMs some room should they wish to make a 2-1 or a 3-1 style trade or pick up an available player. Once the season is completed and keepers must be fixed for the following year, GMs must follow the Keeper Rules listed above. All position eligibility is based on Fantrax ratings.
Length of season: Either 19 or 20 weeks of Head-to-head competition (one-week increments), followed by 6 weeks of playoffs (three rounds of two-week increments).
Scoring: Hybrid scoring is points-based but in a Head-to-Head format. Points are accumulated in the following categories: For skaters: G (5 points), A (5), STP (1), PIM (0.3), SOG (0.2), Hits (0.2), Blks (.2) For goalies: W (7 points), SO (7), Saves (0.2), GA (-1)
Each week of competition refers to games played from Monday to Sunday, and managers must make roster changes before the first game of the week for the upcoming week’s match-up, which are then locked in for the duration of that week. GMs receive either a win or a loss at the end of the week based on accumulated points in all of the categories combined. Tie breakers are to be broken with total goals scored during the match up.
Playoff Seeding and Tie-Breakers: When our league converts into playoff mode the system automatically generates a seed for each team in the league based on the regular season results. The seeds determine where the system places each team in the playoffs. The primary factors which determine seeds are:
1. Overall Record/Winning Percentage
In the event that two or more teams have the same winning percentage at the conclusion of the Regular Season, and have played the same number of Head-to-Head games between them, the following tie-breaking system determines the seed:
1 - Head-to-head record
2 - Overall points
3 - Overall points-against
4 - Coin
In the event that two or more teams have the same winning percentage at the conclusion of the Regular Season, and have not played the same number of Head-to-Head games between them, the following tie-breaking system determines seed:
1 - Overall record
2 - Overall points
3 - Overall points-against
4 - Coin Flip
Playoffs: At the end of the season the top eight teams enter the playoffs. In the first round, the team seeded first faces the team seeded eighth, the team seeded second faces the team seeded seventh, the team seeded third faces the team seeded sixth, and the team seeded fourth faces the team seeded fifth. The first round lasts two weeks with roster changes being allowed at the midway point. The second round features the top surviving seeded team (determined from regular season standings) pitted against the lowest surviving seeded team, and the two teams seeded in the middle play each other. Again, it lasts two weeks and roster changes are allowed at the midway point. The third and final round pits the two surviving teams against each other for the last two weeks of the NHL regular season. Again, roster changes are allowed at the midway point.
Trades: Trades can happen at any time during the year up to the deadline. There are no limits on the number of trades a manager can make. The league is using a 24 hour auto accept during which time each GM will have an opportunity to vote on the trade. 6 veto votes are required to overturn a trade. NOTE: this option to veto is only to be used in extreme situations to prevent managers from “stacking” a single roster. If a GM has an issue with a trade it is to be voiced directly to the commissioner with a complete reason as to why collusion is suspected. A trade is only to be vetoed if collusion is involved or in extreme cases E.g. McDavid & a 3rd for a 2nd.
This is not to be taken lightly, only complain/veto in extremely extreme cases. Bad trades happen. Bad trade does not = collusion.
Trading Draft Picks: Apart from players, draft picks in our August draft are eligible to be traded. Note: Picks that are greater than 4 drafts distant may not be traded. Only the first 10 rounds of the draft will be eligible for trade.
Once a GM finishes there 30th player selection in the fall draft, they are no longer eligible to trade away picks in said draft. E.g. If you are done in the 9th round and still own your 10th round pick, you forfeit said pick without the rights to trade it once you make that final selection. The 10th rounder is fair game to be traded before the 30th roster player is drafted though.
Trade Deadline: Three weeks prior to the start of our playoffs. No trades can occur from this date until our fantasy playoffs have concluded.
Waiver pick-ups: Each team will be given $50 to be used towards weekly bidding of free agents. Player eligibility is as per our Fall draft. This money does not carry over from one season to the next and may not be involved in trades. The waiver wire will open after the first week of the regular season. Note: there is a $2 minimum bid. The final week for Free Agent bids will be the second final week of the regular season, which would put them as accepted officially on the final week of the season (since FA bids are approved on Monday’s, before roster deadline).
Farm Regulations: Players are considered eligible for you farm keeper limit (5) if they have played 82 regular season games or less (41 games for goalies). We will consider stats found on the website www.hockeydb.com to be the final authority on whether a player is eligible or not. Aka at 83/42gp a player is no longer considered farm eligible. In August of the following year all prospects that have played more than 82 NHL regular season games (or 41 games for goalies) by the end of the NHL playoffs have to be dropped or frozen into one of your keeper slots. Prospects that have not yet played 83 NHL regular season games can be held over as farm team prospects, which is in addition to your allotted number of keeper slots.
Managers can trade for as many farm prospects as they like, but they should remember that every August they can only protect and carry forward up to five (5) farm team eligible players. Again, any additional prospects will either have to be moved up to the regular team or dropped.
Note: Farm eligible players are only important on two dates of the year.
1) After the draft, where every team must have 5 players minimum who have under or equal to 82gp/41 for goalies.
2) Keeper deadline, where teams may keep upwards of 5 players who have under or equal to 82gp/41 for goalies.
Every other day of the year farm eligible players are not tracked and any player within the games played limit would be seen as a regular player on a teams 33 man limit. There is NOT a separate team for these players and any owned players MAY be used in daily lineups
KHL Rules: It is important to note that the KHL is as much of a risk factor as injury or retirement. A player of any nationality could decide at any time that they wish to continue their career elsewhere. This is a common factor of fantasy hockey. There will be no compensation for players fleeing to the KHL, nor will there be compensation for players who are injured, retire or pass away.
Inaugural Season
During the Inaugural Season pick trading will be limited to one year out (2019). At the conclusion of the season the general four year period will be in effect. As stated below in the Inaugural Draft section, trading of future draft picks will not be permitted until after the 30 round draft. Unlike most years, during the inaugural season, it will NOT be required that every team drafts 5 farm eligible players. Please note however that at the completion of the season, the keeper format will remain the same, which includes up to 5 farm players.
Tanking: Don't do it. It isn't allowed or accepted in Hickory Hockey League. Tanking lowers the quality of the league. Please note however that trading to get younger is not tanking and that sometimes there is a clear winner in a trade since we all have different perceptions on players.
Collusion: In no way shape or form is collusion accepted within the pool. If at any point collusion is suspected it is to be brought to the commissioner’s attention immediately. In the case that it is deemed collusion, it will result in immediate removal of the pool. Just like in cases where someone quits the pool, a refund will not be granted.
League Changes: Owners are encouraged to submit proposals for rule adjustments or modifications to the commissioner. If the proposal is approved, a 2/3rds vote is required to accept proposed changes. It is important to recognize that no changes will occur during the course of a fantasy season, but rather during the off season.
